Working in collaboration with Hammes Company, hospital administration was challenged to provide modern facilities in a replacement strategy. The Master Plan responded to regional growth, demographic changes, the changing needs in health care delivery and the requirements for facility improvements. The existing 450 bed, one story facility would be phased out and replacement buildings constructed to reduce the operational impacts. The planning solution included a 600 bed, six story, 1,200,000 sf hospital with expansion room for an additional 200 beds over time. The campus was also zoned for medical office and outpatient services in tandem with the replacement hospital. The replacement facility was conceived with a courtyard plan, with special attention to preservation requirements of the existing historic building and the unique design opportunities in a hot, arid climate.
