Another thought is get the students involved, let them own the new facility. For example, art students could create outdoor sculptures, art work, etc. Welding students could participate in this. Its free labor and it reflects the student body. Have the horticulture class work on projects around the campus to make it beautiful and creative. One thing I noticed that has changed so much over the years, MHCC used to be a college that looked like the students participated and made it a unique and great place, now it feels more institutional and has that "the librarian or social worker" is running the joint feeling. Via the courses offered, there is a an opportunity to both make the campus inviting and exciting, young and hip and progressive. It feels like an institution and not i the good way. This would also energize the staff and make them feel more invested in the students and the facility.

Please make sure they add some "green" around the entrance of the campus. One thing that stands out about the existing facility and the proposed new facility is BLAH, add some life with plants. This is Oregon, let's celebrate the nature. The college is on a nice piece of land and you wouldn't know it from the entrance. The flagpole area is barren and looks like a russian embassy. Think Oregon, think Green, and get the students to participate in making this a beautiful space.

Did MHCC just put a bunch of money into the infrastructure over the past summer of 2009?

I agree with the previous post. The Electronics technologies program is no longer in existence at MHCC. I know from personal experience that the Welding technologies facility is outdated beyond belief.

CCC and PCC have way more potential to offer to incoming community college students.

Ski is a great guy! I don’t mean any harm towards him. MHCC is and has been run down for quite some time. MHCC requires a major overhaul, and more added curriculums to go along with the investment.

There are many strong ideas in this proposal, but I would like to specifically address the amphitheater. While the amphitheater is a noble idea, it would not be used enough to make the investment worthwhile. Oregon weather from September to June is not reliable enough to plan outdoor performances, and in the summertime our performance classes are not in session.

It might be a better use of resources to create more multi-purpose rooms than can be used by many different groups from September to June. Many of our multi-purpose rooms are heavily used and difficult to schedule.

My daughter, is now in Centennial high school junior, really likes the master plan with the new look and the view of the mountain. She said she will attend at MHCC for her college years. Before this, she’s planning to somewhere else.

The future is bright for Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC). Even though we are currently dealing with tight budgets and decreasing state support, we are planning ahead and strategically looking forward. As we move through these challenging times, it is encouraging and helpful to have an end goal in mind. The College’s strategic plan and master plan go hand in hand to guide the College forward. Thank you!

I watch the MHCC web site often since their new president has arrived. It is apparent that a lot is happening at the institution. Living in this community for so long I've come to have some disdain for the College since it has become isolated from the community from the days of Strawberry shortcake seminars and other activities. The last president was a dud and really hurt the college and community and the one they have now has a lot of work to do to rebuild an image of an organization that has been faltering for almost a decade.

I am very impressed with this plan. I think it gives not only MHCC hope but our struggling community. This college needs to be at the center of everything we do and this plan, the new president and the renewed engagement in the community should help lift all boats.

Nice concept, but all of these nice buildings and roads and malls will be worth very little to a college that has not replaced departed faculty, has had to come to its employees for voluntary pay reductions by furlough, and has a VP of Instruction who is considering eliminating programs based on an unspecified "return on investment" scheme. Nice rooms but no teachers or programs doesn't make sense. And with the college in the red financially, just how did the Board pay for this consultancy?
